KEEP MASSACHUSETTS BEAUTIFUL

Abby Abrahamson

Founding Member

A lifelong Rehoboth resident, Abby is an environmental and social activist. She launched Keep Rehoboth Beautiful after becoming concerned about the harm that invasive litter is causing to animals, waterways, trees, and plants in our community. Abby went away to college in Western Massachusetts, graduated, and is now engaged in career and adult life as a social advocate.

Ron Whittemore

KRB Committee Member

A retired engineer and tooling branch manager, Ron has lived in Rehoboth since 1992.  Ron says, “Rehoboth's combination of tradition, rural character, and simple country beauty make the town a great place to live. The Keep Rehoboth Beautiful Committee seeks to preserve these qualities by working with local business and the town's citizens to host an Annual Town Clean-up and to raise awareness of the true cost of litter on the landscape. I think it is important to contribute to those goals. Unfortunately, many people think that the trash they discard is the responsibility of someone else."

Jen LeComte

Founding Member

Before relocating to North Carolina, Jen spent countless hours picking up trash and advocating to ban plastic nip bottles that accumulate in astonishing numbers on our roadways. When she first heard about KRB, she was eager to join and work with like-minded townspeople. "Don't just complain about it, be part of the solution!"

Nancy Muri

KRB Committee Vice Chair

My husband and I moved to Rehoboth in 1991 and have always enjoyed its rural, backroads beauty. We raised our two sons here. I joined KRB because it seemed like a productive way to give back to our community. The town-wide spring clean-ups have been successful wlth large amounts of trash picked up off our roadsides. I would like to see these efforts continue for many years to come. My biggest litter pet peeve is seeing trash at the base of the Do Not Litter signs on highway ramps!

ORIGINS OF KEEP MASSACHUSETTS BEAUTIFUL

Back in 2008, Executive Director Neil Rhein's wife encouraged him to stop complaining about the litter along the streets of his hometown in Mansfield and told him to "do something about it."  Neil and others formed a group of local volunteers and government leaders to launch the first Great American Cleanup of Mansfield. More than 700 volunteers came out and collected nearly five tons of trash. The next year, Keep Mansfield Beautiful was developed to foster a sense of community pride, drastically reduce the volume of litter and beautify public spaces through volunteer labor and in-kind donations worth more than $350K to the Town of Mansfield. In 2014, Neil founded Keep Massachusetts Beautiful to help bring these successful programs to towns and cities across the commonwealth.

MISSION

KMB works to mobilize residents, government, and business leaders to work together to keep Massachusetts communities clean, green, and litter-free.  The core impact areas include: litter cleanup and prevention; beautifiction & community greening; and waste reduction & recycling through legislation and common sense changes to reduce the amount of trash we each generate every day.

LOCAL CHAPTERS

Massachusetts communities benefit by having a dedicated group of concerned citizens who work to keep their towns clean, green, and litter-free.  Local chapters organize volunteers, local businesses, and municipal resources to improve their communities through: community cleanups, beautification programs like Adopt-A-Spot, educational events, and support of common sense legislation.

Growing up in Rehoboth has been amazing! So many trees, animals, and friendly people. Rehoboth is a beautiful place that I am sure many people enjoy living in. Seeing trash along the roadside is frustrating, when people like myself, are trying to keep it clean. I joined this committee to help our beautiful town. Do your part to keep rehoboth beautiful!

My daughters and I moved to Rehoboth in 2014 to share a life with my husband Stephen. Prior to moving here, I visited often and was in awe of the natural beauty of this bucolic town. Once settled and able to spend much more time walking and biking, it became evident that there was an underlying issue with littering. I wanted to help make a difference in the community and eagerly signed up and participated in the 1st and 2nd KRB cleanups. Despite my and many other’s efforts, the litter continued. My mission to keeping this community beautiful and the natural environment healthy became stronger and I applied to be a committee member of KRB. I am very excited to work with this team and keep this movement strong.

My family and I moved to Rehoboth almost 10 years ago. We were looking for a peaceful place with plenty of outdoor space and we loved the beautiful serenity of Rehoboth. When I was little I can remember my dad talking to me about litter. I don’t recall what he said, but since then I’ve always been disgusted by people discarding trash on road. A few years ago I saw some people in neon shirts on the side of the road cleaning litter. I got really excited and wanted to find out more about them and how I could help. My family and I participated in the next couple of cleanups. I decided to join KRB to help find ways to keep our town beautiful for generations to come.

I moved to Rehoboth when I was 7 and have had a great experience in my neighborhood and town. Lots of fun at the baseball fields and playing outdoors with friends. I’ve seen the discarded trash on the fields and on the roads and it has always bothered me. My family participated in the cleanups the last two years and my mom encouraged me to become a KRB committee member to try to help out with solutions to our litter problem. It feels good to be doing something for my town
